In order to finance the Memory Care Lane conversion/addition the Board of Directors at their regular monthly meeting on August 25, 2014 approved establishing a "Friends of Hill Top House" membership group. This special group will consist of friends who understand the need, catch the vision, and support the project by joining with the Board of Directors in pursuing their common goals.
The Board of Directors and Administrator of HTH diligently sought the most cost effective and efficient means in which to accommodate the ever growing need of Alzheimer/Dementia's caregiving. It is our hope this project can be achieved through donations and grants. Any comments and questions from the community citizens are welcome.

With the above Alzheimer's/Dementia facts in mind and analyzing the past and present census, the Bucklin Hospital District Board of Directors is looking into expanding the facility known as Hill Top House. Currently staff members at Hill Top House do their best to meet the needs of those residents who are experiencing some level of dementia. However, the current facility arrangement leaves much to be desired. The proposed Expansion, defined as a "Memory Care Lane", would better meet the needs of those seniors who currently and in the future would call HTH their home. Also, a Memory Care Lane will provide a safe, secure, and more comfortably contained environment that is necessary for the thriving of those loved ones. Anyone who has experienced or is experiencing a loved one with the condition can easily understand the necessity for a special unit. The current living space for the remainder of the residents at Hill Top House basically would remain as is.
The Memory Care Lane plan would convert the end section of the southwest wing and expand the area out from the existing building. This additional space would include a common area for special activities and allow more freedom of movement under close supervision.
It has been and still is the goal of the Board to be progressive, looking toward future resident needs while overseeing ongoing stewardship of tax dollars, revenue and debt in a responsible manner. In 2009-10, a new drainage was necessary to prevent frequent flooding and the old HVAC system had to be replaced requiring a bonded debt of $1,250,000. The remaining outstanding debt of $570,000.00 from these projects had an original maturity date of 2024. By retiring some bonds early, the date is now 2020. The Board of Directors is not in favor of taking on any more debt until the current debt is retired.
According to the Alzheimer's Association statistics at www.alz.org. facts over 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's and as many as 16 million will have the disease in 2050. Of Americans aged 65 and older, 1 in 9 has Alzheimer's; 1 in 3 people aged 85 and older has the disease. Another American develops Alzheimer's disease every 67 seconds. The cost of caring for those with Alzheimer's/Dementia is estimated to total $214 billion in 2014. This number is projected to increase to $1.2 trillion (in today's dollars) by mid-century. In 2013, 15.5 million family and friends provided 17.7 billion hours of unpaid care to those with Alzheimer's and dementia- care valued at $220.2 billion. Nearly 60% of caregivers rate the emotional stress of caregiving as high or very high; more than one-third report symptoms of depression. Due to the physical and emotional toll of caregiving, Alzheimer's and dementia caregivers had $9.3 billion in additional healthcare costs of their own in 2013. Nearly 1 in every 3 seniors who dies each year has Alzheimer's or another dementia.
